Josie Lawrence honoured by Uni

Popular actress and comedienne Josie Lawrence is being honoured by the University of Wolverhampton for her outstanding contribution to the theatrical world, charitable works and continuing affinity with the Black Country.

She will be presented with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure on Monday September 13.

Josie was born in Old Hill in 1959 and decided at the age of five that she wanted to be an actress.

When she was 16 she joined the Barlow Players in Oldbury and from 1978 to 1981 she studied theatre at Dartington College of Arts and received a BA Honours degree.

Josie has appeared in numerous theatre productions which include the title role in Moll Flanders, Liza Dolittle in Pygmalion and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, for which she won the Manchester Evening News Award for Best Actress.

In 2001 Josie played Anna in The King and I at the London Palladium and enjoyed a highly successful nine-month run. She is currently appearing in the all female production of Much Ado about Nothing at Shakespeare’s Globe playing the lead male Benedick.

Her many television roles include The Green Man with Albert Finney, Norbert Smith with Harry Enfield, Swalk and Lunch in the Park with Paul Merton, Fat Friends, three series of the award-winning Outside Edge and her own series Josie. She is perhaps best known for her skill at comedy improvisation and appeared in seven episodes of the BAFTA. award winning Whose Line Is It Anyway? Films include Enchanted April with Joan Plowright and the Sineater with Rhys Iffans.

Josie also writes, directs and works on many radio productions. She has also been a member of the Comedy Store Players for the last eighteen years.

In 2003 Josie spent eight months walking across China, Cuba, Peru and Tanzania for Breakthrough Breastcancer and helped to raise over £550,000. Next year she is due to climb Africa’s highest free-standing mountain, Kilamanjaro, for Sunfield School in Clent of which she is the Patron.
