Kick off for new course in Singapore
Football stars in Singapore - including the national team’s goalkeeper - are hoping to hit the back of the net with help from University of Wolverhampton lecturers.
The University is offering a one-year BA (Hons) Sports Management degree to students at Novation Business School in Singapore and staff went over for their first teaching session this month.
Wolves new signing Darren Ward presented a signed shirt to University lecturer Steve Gelder, which was taken over to Novation as a gift.
The presentation at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground at Compton Park was organised by former England women’s cricket team captain and Wolverhampton Wanderers Vice President Rachael Heyhoe Flint MBE.
Among the students studying the course is Lionel Lewis, the Singapore national team’s goalkeeper. The innovative distance-learning course allows the students to study equivalent year one and two courses in Singapore, with the third year material taught by University of Wolverhampton lecturers to obtain the qualification. Staff will visit a total of four times over a year and the agreement is set to be repeated next year.
Senior Lecturer in Sport Management Steve was one of two University lecturers who went to Singapore. He said: "This collaboration is a tremendous opportunity to further develop the University links in South East Asia. Singapore is a progressive country and is investing heavily in a sports hub that will see huge investment in the sports, entertainment and lifestyle industries. Our programme will prepare graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage this growth."
